These cubes are made for ..??

The late American architect Philip Johnson is quoted as saying 'all architecture is shelter; all great architecture is the design of space that contains, cuddles, exalts or stimulates the persons in that space'.

What I'm not sure is whether the modernist, cubist-inspired trend in architecture successfully combines all of the above. Taking a look at these buildings from around the world there is certainly a lot of containing, perhaps a bit of exalting but, in my view, not a lot of cuddling. As for feeling stimulated ... well, I guess you really need to be there.

And with the first one called the BUMPS building complex - a mixed-use building in Beijing by Sako Architects - what more can I say? What do you think?
