MEDTREKKING IN THE RAIN

MedTrekking in the Rain

By Joel Stratte-McClure

My rainiest and wettest week of MedTrekking occurred last April when I slogged south of Naples along the Sorrentino Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast (after walking it, I think they should change the name to the Amalfi Cliffs) to Salerno, Italy.

The breathtaking and gorgeous (not words I use lightly) terrain/views surpass the French Riviera, Spain's Costa Brava and Morocco's virginal coast - which is why almost every city, monument and structure here has been classified a World Heritage Sight by UNESCO.
My selection of bright and inspiring spots includes:
Le Torre di Normanni, my new favorite lunch-time restaurant, which occupies the top floor of a weathered medieval tower just outside Maiori.

Amalfi's Piazza Duomo where I arrived at the end of a long hiking day to take this snapshot while holding a gigantic multi-flavored (banana, lemon and strawberry) ice cream cone in my right hand. The extraordinary thing about gelato after an eight-hour walk is that it is an absolute dietary/physical/spiritual/mental necessity.

Lovely mosaic maps that prominently feature the area's seductive sirens.

The delight of arriving in vertiginous villages like Positano.

The view back towards Positano that illustrates the type of terrain that I MedTrekked on the Amalfi Coast/Cliffs.
