If ever there was the time for a national SWOT analysis, this
would be it.
And that, to a certain extent, is what Innovation Nation is. We
see this companion to Fast Thinking magazine as the first edition
for what we hope will be an ongoing series of annuals that sum up
the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing
Australia's innovation scene.
It also incorporates a wider group of profiles on the breadth of
innovative approaches than is possible within a single quarterly
edition. In doing this we seek to provide an expanded look at the
applied imagination and productive creativity from all corners of
the nation, from all types of organisations.
In these pages - in this first edition - you will find exclusive
appraisals of the National Innovation Systems Review (by the chair
of that body, no less); of Australians' attitudes to innovation by
the premier research group in the nation; a reminder of how we have
travelled (or not) in terms of R&D performance and providing
venture capital for our start-up and early stage companies; a
timeline of key events; the view ahead from the Federal Minister
for Innovation; and a reappraisal of the trials and tribulations of
our most recent Nobel laureates. Plus a wide selection of articles
looking at a range of activities in education, the arts, science
and technology, medicine, ICT, and local and regional
development.
We hope that this makes for interesting reading, and that it
presages well for bigger and better in the future.
Interesting times, indeed. And now for 2009.
