What innovation means to safety in logistics

Fields of Interest:

    Michael Byrne, CEO, Fox Logistics

When Linfox Logistics started with our Vision Zero safety program seven years ago, our LTIFR (lost time injury frequency rate) was at an unacceptably high level. With a workforce of 6000 we were experiencing 60 injuries a month. Now with a global workforce of 15,000 this is down to between 4-7 incidents each month.

We now benchmark our safety performance with the best in Australia, like DuPont or BHP Billiton. We have achieved this performance improvement by rigorous and regular drug and alcohol testing but also equally importantly by engineering cultural change in our organisation.

Every single meeting covers safety, our staff are rated on their safety performance and three times a year our staff participate in a Stop for Safety scheme where they can critique the effectiveness of our safety programs.

Naturally a focus on safety has brought rigour and discipline to other parts of the business. So a focus on safety also delivers to the bottom-line. Recently we won a $600 million account because of our exceptional safety track record and we have enjoyed double digit growth in profitability year on year since the start of Vision Zero.
